THAT’S NOT RACIAL TRANSCENDENCE

Obviously, Sarah Palin Is Racist

‘So Sambo beat the bitch!’ This is how Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin described Barack Obama’s win over Hillary Clinton to political colleagues in a restaurant a few days after Obama locked up the Democratic Party presidential nomination.” How dare sexist lipstick dog Sarah Palin call Hillary Clinton a “bitch.” [LA Progressive]

We actually think this Sarah Palin tale is a pretty dumb story but when we found out that we could steal Wonkette’s kid and paste him here – we went for the kidnapping.  Also, we’ve always wanted a semi-legitimate excuse to show our copy of Little Black Sambo.

I have a hard time believing that anyone would say what it’s claimed that Palin said.   Of course, she was born in Sandpoint, Idaho which is still about 98% white.  It’s the home of Mark Fuhrman of OJ fame and has been associated with white supremacists.

According to that Wiki place Palin was raised in Wasilla, Alaska.  As of the census of 2000. there were 5,469 people, 1,979 households, and 1,361 families residing in the city. The population density was 466.8 people per square mile (180.2/km²).  There were 2,119 housing units at an average density of 180.9/sq mi (69.8/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 85.46% White, 0.59% Black or African American, 5.25% Native American, 1.32% Asian, 0.13% Pacific Islander, 1.32% from other races, and 5.94% from two or more races. 3.68% of the population were Hispanic or Latino.

So, why is this important?  Well, maybe it isn’t.  However, I’ll point out that I was raised in a small town that had only 1 black family + 1 single older black man living in the town, I regularly heard the n-word in my house, especially when Cassus Clay was boxing, I remember Little Black Sambo, and everyone in my town openly called the single black older gentleman N-Word Buster.   In fact, I had no idea there was any problem with that until I was a teenager.

So, is it possible that Sarah Palin would say it?  I suppose it is but it sure does suck to think so.

After the jump, the entire story of Little Black Sambo.

So for those of you who have never been introduced to Sambo, here is the basic story.  It’s a kids’ book by Helen Bannerman that was first published around 1900.   The book was used in many public schools in the US – including mine.

After the jump, the rest of the story.

I just read a thought provoking post by Amber:  I am a BIRACIAL lesbian!

In the post, Amber discusses an Austin gay and lesbian magazine named L Style G Style.  The L Style G Style website describes the magazine this way:

L Style G Style is the authoritative lifestyle magazine for social and cultural influencers in the gay/lesbian community and beyond. It offers an unprecedented forum for reaching highly discerning and affluent consumers who set the tastes and trends for our society as a whole.

I had never heard of the magazine until I read Amber’s post. So I checked it out. The first thing I noticed was a photo of Bettie Naylor. All lesbians should know about Bettie. She is a walking, talking hero. I added a photo of Bettie and her partner, Libby Sykora, to our Lesbo Photos section. The photo is from The L Style G Style website. I’ve wanted to add the couple for some time but was unable to find a good photo of them.

Back to Amber.

What is the obligation of L, G, B, and/or T organizations/publications/websites/support groups to include a diverse representation of the “LGBT” community?

Is Amber’s reaction justified?

Even a quick peek will reveal that the L Style G Style website is about as white as white can get.
